Collet issues

Was very excited to get my two multi drives, stubster, leather + metal case, and other extras. But so far I’ve been disappointed with the collet grip, especially on the all stainless steel multi drive. I had one attachment fall out, and a bunch pull out with just a bit of pressure (torque or pulling), even after tightening the collet as much as possible. I’ve tried to tighten the small grub screw as well, but either the screw is damaged or the small Allen key is too small, because the Allen key turns and the grub screw will not (in either direction). The steel + black is a little better, and the Stubster seems to be rock solid, but I’m still a bit let down. Anyone else dealing with an issue like this?

On a more positive note, the leather case is awesome. Great quality there.

Hi Alex, thank you for your post! We appreciate you letting us know here on CubeClub :handshake:

I’m going to have our customer service team reach out to you and resolve this for you!

Hey Alex, I had the same issues you did, and just spent some time with 1000/1500 sandpaper lightly polishing and knocking off sharp edges and cleaning up the transition in the cap. I did it to all of mine, and the all improved to the point I can’t pull the bits out at all anymore unless I really pull on them. I think there is some small burs and sharp edges left over from the EDM process. edit: the allen wench they sent is too small, but if you have a .9mm one it fits (I used the one from my Ifixit kit)

Very helpful, thank you! I do see some small burs and sharp edges in the gaps in the collet, even on my stainless steel/aluminum one (which is generally much better than the all stainless steel one, similar to what you report), and I can see how that would reduce the designed grip. Is that what you cleaned up with sandpaper?

I appreciate this reply, but haven’t heard from anyone on the customer service team since your comment. Would this outreach come via email?

pretty much, I also hit the outside surface of the collet quickly, as well as I clean the inside where the collet clamps onto the bits to give it a more uniform grip in case there were any artifacts from machining with the stick of a q-tip and some sand paper. I wouldn’t use anything coarser than 1000 grit either. if you have the 1500 use that, but all I had on hand was 1000 and it worked well enough.

Hey Alex! I’m the usual customer service contact but I’ve been on holiday, I’ll pop an email over to you now!

Hey Shay, I’ve been getting the same issues with my collets. Even after trying sand paper, I cannot seem to get them to reliably maintain a grip on the bits and other tools… Has there been any developments around this?

Hey Sean, sorry I missed this, and sorry to hear you’ve been having this issue! Is this consistent across all your attachments/adaptors/bits? And when you’re seating bits in the collet is the hex firmly in? If you want to send a video over to hello@metmocube.com I can take a look and advise here!
